Alexander Joy Cartwright (April 17th, 1820 – July 12th, 1892), was an American engineer whom US Kongress. Officially declared as the inventor of baseball on June 3rd, 1953. Cartwright, who was a banking officer by profession, worked in the fire brigade New York Knickerbockers. Brigade members have spent their free time playing town ball – forerunner of baseball – in an empty field in Manhattan. When that play field was closed, on 1845, Cartwright came on the idea to organize games in Elysian Fields Park in Hoboken, New Jersey, on the other side of Hudson river.
To raise funds for the lease of land. Cartwright and his friends on September 23rd, 1845 founded a club called New York Knickerbockers. For that club, Cartwright wrote rules, which will be later known as Knickerbocker rules and will become the basis for the rules of the modern game. According to these rules, on June 19th, 1846 was held the first baseball game in history between New York Knickerbockers and New York Nine.
In National Association of Base Ball Players (NABBP) is the first organization which regulated baseball in the USA. It was established in 1857 And members were sixteen clubs from the area of today New York. On the constituent assembly, they adopted the new rules, which were mainly based on Knickerbocker rules.
Although they made significant changes and these new rules were pretty much more similar to rules that are used in modern baseball. On 1858, a sportswriter Henry Chadwick wrote the first rule book, and though the rules continue to change with small variations, by 1900, the game was essentially that of today.
The Development of Professional Baseball in the United States
In the beginning, this was nothing but a local initiative and in USA people used to call baseball “the New York game.” In the rest of the USA, similar games were popular. Such as croquet and town ball in Philadelphia. However, the outbreak of the American civil war on 1861 and accession of a big number of New Yorkers. In the ranks of the Northern army made New York game popularized all over the nation.
That also affected on NABBP, which had 100 clubs in its membership after the war ended, on 1865. Only two years later in NABBP there were 400 clubs and some of them were from distant areas such as San Francisco and Louisiana.
The sudden popularity of this sport put on the agenda a question of its popularization. NABBP strongly opposed, insisting on the consistent implementation of the principles of amateurism. However, on 1869 NABBP allowed professionalization of the clubs.
Two years later tension between amateur and professional clubs led to the schism on NAPBB. Convention and professional clubs established National Association of Professional Base Ball Players, first professional baseball league in the USA. American Association (AA) used to be top professional baseball league. Which operated from 1882 to 1891. It was conceived as a counterweight and opponent to older and more dominant National League.
Together with National League, American Association organized an older version of the big baseball final known as World Series. Soon after that, Major League Baseball (MLB) was established as sports organization which gathers two professional leagues in North America – National League and American League.
In 2000 both leagues were officially dismissed as special corporate customers. And all rights and obligations were transferred to MLB commissioner. MLB is acting as a single league and is one of the leading professional sports leagues of North America, to this day. Major League Baseball (MLB) is the term that indicates the top professional baseball.
From its very beginnings, baseball has been considered as one of the most popular game in the USA. And it has become a part of their tradition. A lot of parents enroll their children in baseball, and it is a fact that playing not only baseball. But any sport, can be a turning point in a young person’s life. This does not mean that every child that starts training baseball will become a professional player. However, there are plenty of important reasons why baseball should be a great choice for your child.
On the first place, playing baseball can teach your child about the importance of teamwork. Baseball, as a team sport, requires that players constantly cover each other to secure a victory.
Your child will learn how to focus on important tasks and how to co-operate with others to meet the common goal successfully. It will learn to make decisions both independently and together with his teammates. And definitely, your kid will become more responsible and sociable and will realize the importance of constant work on itself. Because without hard work and continuous training will not be visible results. This lesson can be translated in any aspect of your child’s life.
Exercise in Fresh Air
Fresh air is the key element needed to maintain life. Your health particularly depends upon the amount of fresh air breathed. So, parents, if you have any doubts enrolling your kid to baseball, do not forget about how important for your child’s development is spending time outdoors. More oxygen into our body also brings clarity to the brain, which needs twenty percent of our body’s oxygen to function properly. Also, fresh air is good for child’s lungs, heart, digestion, and immune system. Also, it has been scientifically proven that physical activity in the fresh air increases the level of secretion of serotonin – the hormone of happiness.
Doing sports is really important for a child to ensure proper body development. Baseball is a great choice. It’s far better and less dangerous than some other sports, like gymnastics, boxing or American football. It develops endurance, agility, explosiveness and strength of your child’s body. Also, baseball develops the hand and feet and the reflex responses of the limbs and eyes. So to make your kid well prepared for life, to be strong and healthy, don’t hesitate to enroll him or even her to baseball.
The last, but not the less important, is that your child could make a lot of great friends doing baseball, even for life. He or she will have so much fun while running, hitting and catching with their teammates and peers and will become more sociable, open-minded and communicative.
So parents, keep in mind that in a healthy body lives a healthy mind and raise your children as educated, mindful, kind and passionate, but also as strong and agile youth that will be able to face life problems successfully.
Many people have the impression that baseball is an exclusively American game, played only on US soil. This, however, is not true, because many other countries have active leagues and thousands of professional or semi-professional players. Countries like Cuba, Japan, and South Korea have shown in many instances that they can challenge the professional players from the richest league in the world – the Major League.
The International Baseball Federation is the ruling body for the sport of baseball on a global level. It was founded in 1938, right after the first Baseball World Cup which took place in London. Soon afterward, the name of IBF was changed to FIBA – Federacion Internacional de Beisbol Amateur.
Once again, in 1976 the name of the organization was changed to International Baseball Association (the AINBA). This was not the end of new names because in 1984, the organization was to be known as IBA and then in 2000, the original name was reintroduced – the IBAF or the Internation Baseball Federation.
Baseball world cup
One of the most long-lasting competitions in the world of international baseball was the Baseball World Cup. First held in 1938, it lasted all the way to 2011 when the last tournament took place. In total, 39 World Cups were held, and Cuba is the most successful nation, winning 25 tournaments.
The Netherlands won the last tournament in 2011. It is important to note that MLS professional players did not participate in these tournaments until 1996 since the schedule of the tournament conflicted with the MLS regular season games.
Other major tournaments
Other tournaments which gathered attention from baseball fans around the world are the Caribbean Series and the World Baseball Classic. While the Carribean series is practically a regional tournament, the Baseball Classic can now be called an unofficial world cup because it takes place every four years and attracts the strongest teams in the world.
The Dominican Republic is the current champion, and the next tournament is scheduled for 2017. Other countries which managed to get on the medal sheet are Japan, South Korea, Cuba, Puerto Rico and Venezuela.
Baseball has been an Olympic sport since 1912 when the US team beat the Vasteras team from Sweden. This was the first appearance of the game in the Olympics. The next appearance was the 1924 games in Paris, and then the 1936 games in Berlin. For these games, the US send two „all-star“ teams, which battled out in front of 90.000 spectators.
After several other appearances as a demonstration sport or simply an attraction, baseball finally became a full-right Olympic sport in 1992, for the Barcelona Games. However, baseball lasted only until Beijing 2008, because it was decided that baseball and softball are to be removed from the Olympic sports list for the 2012 London games.
Nevertheless, baseball remains a popular international sport, with 141 national federations and four associate members of the World Baseball Softball Confederation.
